SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning drivers to watch out for icy spots on roadways throughout western Virginia as low overnight temperatures may have caused re-freezing of any moisture on roadways after yesterday’s winter weather event. 

Roads that appear wet may be icy this morning as overnight low temperatures may have caused patches of ice to form on previously treated roadways.

Motorists should:

• Completely clear ice and snow from their vehicles.
• Drive carefully and use caution.
• Pay particular attention to coolers spots like bridges and overpasses and shaded areas.
• Watch out for down trees or debris in the roadway.

Equipment operators worked on secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) last night and have made significant progress on these routes.  Many unpaved secondary roads remain covered in a layer of frozen snow or ice where conditions will improve once temperatures rise above freezing.
