Demolition Activity on Old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 to Begin on or about October 25; Gallows Road South Traffic Shifts to New Bridge on Sunday, October 24
Nightly lane closures planned on I-66 East and West approaching Gallows Road October 25-November 2

FAIRFAX Pre-demolition activities on the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 will begin during the overnight hours on or about Monday, October 25, with multi-lane closures in both directions on I-66. The Gallows Road Bridge is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and should consider using alternate routes.

Prior to the demolition activities, the southbound travel lanes on Gallows Road are planned to shift to the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 on Sunday evening, October 24, followed by opening the sidewalk on the new bridge on or about Tuesday, October 26. (Northbound Gallows Road travel lanes were shifted to the new bridge on October 14.) Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east side of Gallows Road and the new bridge during demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new span over I-66. Pedestrian detours will cross Gallows Road using the crosswalks at Cottage Street and Avenir Place/Bellforest Drive.

During the nightly closures next week, crews will prepare the old bridge deck for demolition by removing railing and fencing, and will construct a platform under the old bridge to protect the Metrorail Orange Line tracks and the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station. Overall demolition of the old Gallows Road Bridge is anticipated to take approximately 40 to 45 nights. Up-to-date information and lane closures related to this work can be found at the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project’s Gallows Road page.

What Neighbors Should Expect:

  • Pre-demolition activities will begin during the overnight hours on or about Monday, October 25.
  • Most of the bridge is directly over I-66 or the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station and will need to be demolished during overnight hours when multiple lanes can be closed on I-66, and the Metrorail Station and tracks can be closed to safely accommodate this work.
  • Demolition activities will occur during daytime hours when feasible to minimize impacts to the nearby communities.
  • Demolition of the old bridge is anticipated to take approximately 40 to 45 nights of demolition.
